Edith was born to a wealthy family in Aachen, Germany. She was the youngest of four children, including her sister Bettina (nicknamed Betti) who died at age sixteen. She would later honor Betti by naming her first daughter Margot Betti Frank. She and Otto Frank married in spring 1925. They had two children, Margot and Anne. The family fled Germany due to the rise of the Nazi Party, and later was forced to go into hiding in the Netherlands.
