Blackout curtains were vital during wartime, as any shred of light could end up causing a bomb to come down. Blackout curtains could sometimes come in colors other than black, including brown, green, and blue. Any gaps around the edges were covered with brown paper. This ended up stopping all airflow in and out of the house. They could not be washed, as this would make them more likely to let in light.
