Interestingly enough, Anne's famous diary wasn't the only diary - and it wasn't even a diary! The red and white checkered diary was actually an autograph book. She received it as a gift and wrote in it for two weeks prior to her time in the Annex. These entries were addressed to "Dear Kitty" or "Dearest Kitty." Once her initial diary was full, she used two other notebooks and looseleaf paper to continue writing.
In 1944, after hearing about publishing on the radio, Anne decides to rewrite parts of her diary. This was intended to create a guide that she could use to write a novel about her time in the Annex. |
